Cardinal Friedrich Prince Schwarzenberg, draft of the monument for St. Vitus Cathedral at Hradčany

Josef Václav Myslbek

Josef Václav Myslbek - Cardinal Friedrich Prince Schwarzenberg, draft of the monument for St. Vitus Cathedral at Hradčany
Myslbek modelled the larger-than-life statue of cardinal Bedřich Josef prince Schwarzenberg (1809-1885) after photographs since 1891, date of the first plaster sketch. The statue of the deceased cardinal was commissioned by the successor, cardinal count Schönborn, who lent Myslbek rochet, cassock, skull-cap, cope and cushion so that the sculptor did not have to rely on his imagination. The large statue of the kneeling cardinal was created slowly from many realistic details and observations. Myslbek completed the definitive clay model in 1895 with the assistance of his pupils Sucharda, Mařatka, Halmann and Stránský. The first bronze cast was temporarily installed in 1898 under the ground-floor arcade of the Belvedere and then in 1904 by the architect Karel Hilbert, after consultations with Myslbek, in the ambulatory of St Vitus Cathedral at Hradčany.
